Paris terror attacks leave 129 dead after concert hostages are killed

The world is waking up to terrible news this morning after a number of terror attacks in France that were carried out in Paris, took the lives of 129 people and left another 352 badly injured.

Hundreds of music fans were at the Bataclan concert hall last night to watch Eagles of Death Metal, but before the band took the stage the venue was stormed by terrorists and hostages were taken. The BBC reports that around eighty people were killed by gunmen who took them hostage before security forces stormed the hall.

Eagles of Death Metal issued a statement on Facebook, which reads: "We are still currently trying to determine the safety and whereabouts of all our band and crew. Our thoughts are with all of the people involved in this tragic situation."

Both the mother and wife of drummer Julian Dorio have since confirmed to The Washington Post that he'd told them the group had made it out of the venue: "He called to say that he loved me and he was safe. Everyone on stage was able to get off."

The Eagles of Death Metal are a rock band from Palm Desert, California, and they are known for their wit and humour. Josh Homme, the frontman of Queens of the Stone Age, is the other primary member of the band but he was not with the group in Paris.

Universal, the band's label, confirmed there were no fatalities within the band: “No members of the band were killed. That is confirmed.”

Vigils are set to take place in London's famous Trafalgar Square today to honour the victims as Britain shows our solidarity to France.

The first vigil will be held at 2pm and a larger gathering of hundreds of people, some of them French living in Britain, is expected at the second event at 9pm.

Earlier today at 11am, before the start of the annual City of London Lord Mayor's Show, there was a two-minute silence to pay respect to those who have lost their lives or were injured during the attacks.

Union flags across London will be flown at half-mast, including within the financial district of the City of London itself at Guildhall, Mansion House and The Old Bailey.

A spokesperson for the City of London said that security has been heightened but the Lord Mayor's Show would still go ahead as planned today, with the people of Paris very much in everyone's thoughts and prayers.

Tower Bridge will once again be lit in tricolor from sundown to show our support.

Twitter has been flooding with the hashtags #ISIS, #PrayForParis, #JeSuisParis, #PrayersForParis, #StandWithParis, #PrayForPeace, #ParisAttacks and #PrayForHumanity since the news broke.
