Lena Dunham pens letter of support for singer Kesha

It's been a tough week for the American singer Kesha.

Last Friday (February 19) the New York Supreme Court Justice, Shirley Kornreich, ruled against Kesha's request for a preliminary injunction that would release her from her contract with Kemosabe Records, a label owned by Lukasz Gottwald, also known as Dr. Luke, under the umbrella of Sony Music Entertainment.

Since being denied leave from her contract and the news breaking, there has been an outpouring of support on social media for the star, especially from other women in the music industry.

Fellow female star Taylor Swift reached out to Kesha this week and gifted her with financial support of $250,000, whilst other music artists like Lady Gaga, Lorde and Halsey have all spoken out in her defence.

But now the creator of Girls, Lena Dunham, has also got involved in the aftermath of Friday's outcome.

The actress and writer has penned an essay for her newsletter Lenny, which addresses Kesha's case and the problematic, if not flawed in many ways, American legal system surrounding the issue.

Her letter states: "What's happening to Kesha highlights the way that the American legal system continues to hurt women by failing to protect them from the men they identify as their abusers. We are not scared anymore of losing what we worked for, of being targeted and silenced by men in power.

“The women in the music industry speaking out for Kesha are proof. And their words will reverberate, inspiring the young women watching them for clues about the good life to speak up too. Soon, no one will accept shame and fear as the status quo.”
