Who will win Best Original Song at this year's Oscars?

The biggest ceremony in Hollywood for the movie industry, The Oscars, is set to take place tonight (February 28).

And predictions about who will win are already circulating like wildfire, with Lady Gaga's 'Til It Happens To You' currently being the favourite, closely followed by 'The Weeknd's 'Earned It'.

For the first time in the Academy Awards’ 88-year history, songs from two documentaries are nominated for the Best Original Song category.

The nominations for the category are as follows:

  • 'Earned It' (Fifty Shades of Grey) by The Weeknd
  • 'Til It Happens To You' (The Hunting Ground) by Diane Warren and Lady Gaga
  • 'Manta Ray' (Racing Extinction) by J. Ralph and Antony and the Johnsons’ Antony Hegarty
  • 'Writing’s On The Wall' (Spectre) by Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes
  • 'A Simple Song #3' (Youth) by David Lang

Will this be Warren's chance to finally take home an Oscar, after already being nominated seven times before?

Despite the Weeknd's nomination, it's been a year of controversy for The Academy Awards, after receiving a massive backlash on Twitter following the distinct lack of coloured talent on the nomination list.

Furthermore, the movie 'Straight Outta Compton' was pretty much snubbed, even though it grossed $200 million at the worldwide box office.

As a result, many A-listers, like Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee and Snoop Dogg are shunning the Awards this year.

On top of that, Anohni (Antony and the Johnsons’ Antony Hegarty), who is the first transgender person to receive an Academy Award nomination, says that she won't be attending this evening after shockingly being declined the opportunity to perform at it.

Will it be a night to remember? We're sure it will, but let's hope for all the right reasons.
