Years & Years' Olly: 'I'm sent homophobic abuse and rape jokes'

Singer Olly Alexander, who fronts Years & Years, recently sat down for an interview with Britain's NME magazine and opened up about dealing with online negativity.

The star explained that unfortunately he is no stranger to receiving abuse from complete strangers on the Internet and sometimes he has to face homophobic remarks:

“I get trolled. The usual stuff – sometimes it’s homophobic, like gay hate."

"But I don’t understand why people ‘@’ me on Twitter to say ‘Olly Alexander can’t sing’ or ‘Olly Alexander, you’re ugly as f**k’. If we’ve been on TV I don’t go on Twitter for a while after."

He went onto add that some of the things people write to him are so vile that he has learned not to Google himself or to spend too much time on social media platforms: "I get some people who are really gross and make rape jokes about me. It’s f**ked up. That’s why I can’t read too much anymore because I don’t need to be seeing that shit.”

Years & Years, meanwhile, will perform live tomorrow night (April 8) at London's Wembley SSE Arena in London on what will be the final stop of their UK tour
