Hailee Steinfeld on 'Love Myself' lyrics: 'Perceive the song how you will'

Songstress Hailee Steinfeld has addressed the lyrics in her debut single 'Love Myself', which a lot of people interpret as being about masturbation, and revealed that they can be taken in any way the listener wants.

The lyrics include lines such as "Pictures in my mind on replay, I'm gonna touch the pain away, I know how to scream my own name". Speaking to the New York Post's Page Six column about the song and it's suggestive lyrics, the beauty confessed that they're definitely open to interpretation:

"Anyone can perceive it how they will. To me, this song is a self-empowerment anthem."

Earlier this month, she told Harper's Bazaar that 'Love Myself' is "about how much power there is in self-love and being able to provide for yourself. I don't think loving yourself is easy, but I'm realising the importance of it more and more."
