Prince Day declared in honour of the late icon in Minnesota

Today (June 7) has been declared Prince Day in Minnesota.

Governor Mark Dayton confirmed the tribute in honour of the late star's birthday.

The musician was found dead aged 57 in his Minneapolis complex Paisley Park in April after overdosing on opioids.

He lived in Minnesota all of his life.

Residents of the state were asked to wear purple to celebrate Prince's life.

The mayor added: "Prince was the creator of ‘The Minneapolis sound’, a contribution not only to the catalogue of music genres, but to Minnesota’s worldwide prominence and its economic growth."

Tidal meanwhile today added 15 Prince albums to the streaming service in honour of his birthday.
