Sir Paul McCartney receives Kennedy honour

Sir Paul McCartney was awarded at the 33rd annual Kennedy Center honours last night (December 5) and received tributes from several artists for enriching American culture.

The former Beatle witnessed stars including Steven Tyler, No Doubt and Dave Grohl perform songs from his career in his honour.

Actor Alec Baldwin also made an appearance, saying:  "His genius as a music maker is undisputed. But Paul also has a genius for life, and I think the two are related... Paul is kind, giving, thoughtful and funny."

Oprah Winfrey was also honoured at the awards with actress Julia Roberts on hand for a speech, as well as US President Barack Obama, who said:  "The more you know Oprah, the more spectacular you realise her character and her soul are, and the more you appreciate what a wonderful, gifted person she is."

Other artists to receive accolades last night included country singer Merle Haggard and choreographer Bill T. Jones.
