Nathan Sykes says vocal surgery was "the best thing that ever happened to me"

Musician Nathan Sykes has opened up about being a singer in a new interview and explained that there are so many things he has learned along the way.

Chatting to MLB.com recently about his journey to where he is now, Sykes admitted that undergoing vocal surgery as an 18-year-old turned out to be a blessing because it taught him the importance of really looking after his voice:

"At the age of 18 I had a vocal surgery and that kind of stopped me singing for a bit. But, it's the best thing that ever happened to me because I look back and it makes me think, "oh, I really have to look after my vocal chords". It's like asking Usain Bolt to run 100 metres in 10 seconds without stretching... it's madness."

Referring to his exciting solo career, he explained that it's great to be able to discover new things about himself as an artist now that he is no longer one fifth of a group: "This is about me stepping away and finding out who I am as an artist and who I am as a vocalist, as a songwriter... I really ask myself the question, "who am I as an artist?""

He also spoke briefly about songwriting, adding that he started penning tracks from an early age because it was something he always wanted to do and found so enjoyable:

"I think from the age of 14... that's when I really started enjoying writing songs - like, sitting at the piano and just writing all these different songs at the piano. That was really cool. It's a way of communicating what I'm thinking because sometimes I'm not the best at telling people what I'm thinking or how I'm feeling."
