Richard Ashcroft has launched an attack on so-called "critically acclaimed" indie and alternative rock and suggested there is bias against mainstream music.

Speaking to Radio X, the Verve frontman said having "indie credentials" doesn't actually mean a piece of music is any good. The singer opined:

“Just because something’s kinda indie and whatever and only a few people know it, it doesn’t give it more authenticity over Rihanna’s 'work work work'. I’d rather listen to the intro of her tune than 90% of the sh*t that is supposedly critically acclaimed or alternative rock.”
