Campaign launched for Bowie statue in London

A campaign has been launched to raise money for a David Bowie memorial to be erected in London, near to his home in Brixton.

This crowdfunding effort is aiming to raise a total of £990,000 for a three-storey steel construction of the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt, which could then be built next to Jimmy C’s famous Aladdin Sane mural.

At the time of writing, £29,124 has already been raised by 257 supporters. A message on the campaign's page explains: "This project will only be funded if at least £990,000 is pledged by 12:00pm 21st March 2017."

It continues: "Five streets away from Bowie’s Stansfield Road birthplace, and situated next to Jimmy C’s internationally famous Aladdin Sane mural – smack-bang-opposite Brixton tube – the memorial will be the first thing most visitors see when they come to Brixton."

"In the morning, the rising sun will shine directly on the structure – welcome respite for all us commuters. By night, Brixton Academy/Electric/Windmill gig-goers will be welcomed by a dramatically-lit scene. Standing across the road from the equally famous Electric Avenue, the memorial will be a defining part of this most iconic neighbourhood."
