Abbey Road's zebra crossing gets a Grade II listing

The zebra crossing made famous by The Beatles’ iconic album cover for ‘Abbey Road’ has now been Grade II listed.

BBC News today (December 22) reported that the site has been recognised for its “cultural and historical importance".

The head of English Heritage’s designation department, Roger Bowdler, explained:

"This is obviously an unusual case and, although a modest structure, the crossing has international renown and continues to possess huge cultural pull - the temptation to recreate that iconic 1969 album cover remains as strong as ever.”

Paul McCartney also issued a statement, saying that “hearing that the Abbey Road crossing is to be preserved is the icing on the cake."
