Jay Kay slams labels for producing "manufactured nonsense"

Jamiroquai's Jay Kay has spoken out about the repercussions modern life has on the longevity of today's music stars.

Speaking to The Sun's Gordon Smart, he said:

"There's just too much manufactured nonsense for me these days - lads in boybands who are getting a wage from the label."

"It's difficult for all these kids to make any money because they get handed covers. They are under strict instructions - no seeing any birds, get to bed, no drinking. That's not what it's all about, now is it? The Stones, The Who, AC/DC, Mötley Crüe - it was a riot all the time."

"The days of labels having patience and spending time developing acts seem to have gone."

Despite the negativity that Kay feels is shrouding the industry, there is one pop icon in particular that he thinks will enjoy a lengthy and successful career:

"Lady GaGa is one of the few I think will have a 20-year career. I watched footage of her at school performing her own songs on piano."

"She's got a cabaret style about her but she can write her own songs. She gets what being a pop star is."
