Green Day debuts Amy Winehouse tribute at California gig

Green Day honoured the late Amy Winehouse by debuting a new song, 'Amy' at their secret show in California last Thursday (August 11). The band recently posted the full lyrics to the song on their official website.

'Amy' was part of a slew of previously unreleased songs performed by the pop-punk veterans at Costa Mesa's Tiki Bar. All benefits of their performance went to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The band played a full set of new material, with tracks like 'Nuclear Family,' 'Carpe Diem' and 'Sweet 16' followed by an encore of classic Green Day tracks like 'Minority' and 'Burnout'.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong pleads in the chorus of 'Amy': "Amy don't you go/I want you around/Singin' woah, please don't go/Do you wanna be a friend of mine?"

The track ends with Armstrong singing, "May I have this last dance/By chance if we should meet?/Can you write me a lullaby?/So we can sing you to sleep."

After the show, the band thanked fans for coming to the gig:
"Thanks everyone for coming out to the show Thursday night and supporting us and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation," the band posted on its website. "We have been in jamming and writing new songs for the last few months. It felt great to play these new Green Day songs live and share our 'work in progress'... Stay tuned for more!"
