Musicians and fans react to REM's split

REM announced yesterday that after 31 years, they have decided to call it a day

REM and RIP REM are currently trending on Twitter as fans celebrate the band that brought us 'Everybody Hurts' and 'Losing My Religion'.

The iconic band influenced so many musicians, including Radiohead, Muse and Coldplay, during their career that spanned over three decades and produced 15 albums.

Here are some of the reactions from celebrities and musicians:

Zane Lowe wrote:

"REM never dumbed down. Look at the bands they influenced... The Smiths, Radiohead, Nirvana and so on. And they end with dignity. Most won't."

One Republic tweeted:

"one of the best, most enduring bands of our lifetime. you guys will be missed. Your music will keep on keepin' on".

The Strokes and The Futureheads simply tweeted:

Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai wrote:

"REM were the most over rated band on the planet and their singer is the rudest person I've ever met."

Peter from Popjustice wrote:

"Michael Stipe once told me he liked my watch. #RIPEM"
