Singer Etta James dies aged 73

Singer Etta James has passed away after suffering complications from leukaemia.

Her manager Lupe De Leon confirmed the news this afternoon (January 20).

The singer was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2010 and passed away in a California hospital with her family by her side.

In a statement, De Leon said:

"This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world. She was a true original who could sing it all - her music defied category. I worked with Etta for over 30 years. She was my friend and I will miss her always."

James was born in 1938 and enjoyed a successful career as a blues and R&B singer, releasing such tracks as 'At Last' and 'Dance With Me, Henry'.
