Adele, One Direction and Bruno Mars are the first BRIT Award winners

The 2012 BRIT Awards ceremony is in full swing and the first batch of winners have already been announced.

Coldplay kicked off the proceedings with a rousing performance of 'Charlie Brown' and were followed by a brief live set from Florence + The Machine before the British Female Solo Artist prize was presented to an overwhelmed Adele

The 'Someone Like You' hitmaker was up against tough competition from the likes of Jessie J, Laura Marling and Kate Bush, but was confirmed as the winner and took the stage to collect her Peter Blake-designed trophy. She told the audience: "I want to thank my record label for letting me be the kind of artist I've always wanted to be."

Bruno Mars was named the International Male Solo Artist, beating David Guetta, Ryan Adams, Bon Iver and Aloe Blacc, and while giving his acceptance speech he revealed to fans that his sophomore record is on its way.

Other nominated hits included The Wanted's 'Glad You Came', 'You Make Me Wanna' by JLS, and Example's 'Changed The Way You Kiss Me'.

One Direction thanked their record label and management team for all the support since the official launch of their collective post-X Factor career and admitted, "this award is for the fans, we’d be absolutely nowhere without them. This is yours."

Rihanna was also named the International Female Solo Artist and dedicated the win to her followers, telling them how much it means to have their unwavering support: "(thanks to) all my fans who continue to support me no matter what."
