Engelbert Humperdinck looking to win the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest

This year's UK Eurovision contestant Engelbert Humperdinck has spoken of his desire to do the country proud in his first interview since his participation in the event was announced.

The 75-year-old singer was confirmed on Friday (March 2) as this year's UK contestant.

The news was greeted with a largely mixed reception, but Humperdinck told The Sun that he is looking to win the competition for the UK. He said:

"I am just thrilled they have chosen me and I will do my utmost to come through. I am going to do my best and I am ready for the challenge. I am going to go out there and win. I am very positive."

He added: "Representing my country means a great deal to me. I represent my country wherever I go. In every way, shape and form I wave the flag. This has just given me a big thrill."
