Carly Rae Jepsen has spoken out in favour of gay equality after declaring that ‘acceptance has never been a question’ to her.

The 26-year-old, whose video for number one single ‘Call Me Maybe’ sees her lose the man of her dreams to her male guitarist, told Time magazine that she’s always been comfortable with gay people after being asked about the issue of same-sex marriage:

“I’ve grown up knowing it’s just the way things should be. When we shot the Call Me Maybe video, we weren’t even thinking the ending was not normal.

“I have so many gay friends that I love. It’s a regular thing. And if my video is encouraging that mind frame with other children and other people — well, it’s about time, I guess!’”

However, the Canadian singer, who earlier this week revealed she was flattered by the number of online parodies of the video, admitted that she can’t take the acclaim for its gay twist:

“I’d love to take credit, but it was totally my director’s idea. We both knew we wanted the ending to be fun and unpredictable, and when I read that idea, I loved it. It just seemed so perfect.”
