Boyband One Direction have shared tips on how to successfully break up with someone.

In an interview with Britain's OK! magazine, the lads joked about different ways they've tried to get out of sticky situations and one of the heartthrobs even admitted he once told a girl he was gay to quash her persistent interest in him.

Zayn Malik said: "You've got to be careful so you don't come across as arrogant. Say 'you don't want to ruin the friendship' or whatever. There's no point in leading someone on."

Niall Horan revealed that someone once told a past girlfriend of his that he had cheated on her at a party and it was hard to clear his name for some time after the incident:

"I got accused of it (cheating) once at a house party. Someone told her that I had got with another girl when I hadn't. It didn't go down too well."

Cheeky Harry Styles added, "I told someone I was gay once."
