Maroon 5's frontman Adam Levine has opened up about his own experiences of hallucinogenic drugs and explained that taking magic mushrooms helped him to know himself better.

The 'Payphone' superstar told Q magazine that he had a real defining moment while tripping on mushrooms and found it to be a "valuable" period in his life:

"I definitely, firmly believe that the experience I had on mushrooms made me understand certain things about myself that I probably wouldn't have otherwise."

"What I took away from that experience was valuable and beneficial to me. It really forced me to look at myself."

He also added that he would never overuse drugs because of the overwhelming fear that too many chemicals might permanently alter his state:

"It's so corny to say but it's true; you just get in touch with the wonderment you have as a kid that you tend to lose. Obviously if you abuse a drug like that you'll never come back and end up as a f*cking psychotic maniac."
