George Michael pays tribute to Austrian hospital staff with 1000 tickets

George Michael dedicated a concert in Vienna last night (September 4) to the hospital staff in the city that saved his life.

The singer was struck down with a near-fatal bout of pneumonia last year in Austria before spending a prolonged amount of time in a Vienna hospital.

The former Wham! man was forced to pull his tour at the time but he returned to the city on Tuesday night for an emotional show.

He donated 1000 tickets for the Stadthalle Wien gig to staff at the hospital where he was treated, with the star tweeting beforehand:

"Hey everyone, it's that time again! And I get to open the tour singing to the men and women who saved my life."

In an on-stage dedication, Michael said that it was an "honour" to perform in front of the staff. He said:

"I'd like to take the opportunity to say that there are a number of people without whom none of us would be here tonight. This is one of the greatest honours of my life, to sing to the men and women who saved my life."
