Former X Factor contestants One Direction were crowned champions of tonight's (September 6) MTV Video Music Awards after taking home all 3 prizes they were up for.

The lads were nominated for Best Pop Video, Best New Artist and Most Shareworthy Video, and were triumphant in each category. Speaking from the stage, member Niall Horan said: "Thank you so much! We have grown up watching this show and to collect one of these straight away is incredible."

Heartthrob Harry Styles later said backstage: "This has been unbelievable. This was our favorite performance we've ever done. For us to be here in the first place is amazing, and to perform and win a moonman is amazing."

Following the Los Angeles based ceremony, the 'One Thing' hitmakers took to their individual Twitter accounts to express their excitement and disbelief at being so successful. Horan wrote: "Guys what the hell! You are incredible, 3 vmas ! We love u all soo much! All 3 of them are for u! Thank you!"

Styles added: "We owe you everything. Thank you so much for this. Three VMAs!! YEAH .xx"
