The Libertines' Carl Barat awarded honorary degree

Carl Barat, of the Libertines fame, has been handed a honorary doctorate by the University of Winchester in recognition of his important contributions to the arts.

The Libertines rocker gave an entertaining acceptance speech, in which he joked that he decided to accept the privilege "before they realised it was a mistake".

Speaking about the decision to present him with the doctorate, Professor Elizabeth Stuart explained that he's an "interesting figure" and deserved the recognition so he was both an easy choice and a worthwhile one:

"Carl Barat is one of the most innovative and interesting figures in contemporary British music. The University is delighted to honour such a creative and reflective performer."
