X Factor's shy soul singer, Jahmene Douglas has thanked his late brother for saving his life after he locked himself in a room and tried to kill himself following years of abuse from his father. 

Douglas locked himself in his room and tried to kill himself with an overdose of pills after years of physical and mental abuse from his father, Eustace.

His brother managed to break through the door and talk his fragile sibling from taking his own life.

The young talent spoke to the Sunday Mirror:

“Daniel smashed through the door and said "Are you being stupid, do you know how much we all love you?”

“He saved my life that day.”

In a further tragic twist to the tale, his brother took his own life in 2008 following their father’s release from jail.

Douglas is now speaking about his traumatic childhood in hope of raising public awareness of violence within families.

On Saturday night he gave his all as he hit the stage singing Angels by Robbie Williams looking a little nervous.

But his version was a massive hit, with Gary Barlow saying: "Gary Barlow added: 'I've never heard it sung like that before. That was absolutely incredible. The Key to your success is simplicity.'
