Jimi Hendrix's burned guitar sells for £200k at auction

The guitar that rock icon Jimi Hendrix set alight in 1967 sold at auction earlier this week for over £200,000.

The instrument, namely a black Fender Stratocaster, was made famous after Hendrix set fire to it at the Monterey International Pop Festival in '67 and previous owner James Wright, a manager at Hendrix's label, sold it for the impressive sum of £237,000.

Wright opened up about the guitar's history to London's Metro newspaper and explained that Hendrix set fire to it in order to out-do The Who's Pete Townshend, who had smashed up his guitar earlier the same day:

"Jimi asked for some lighter fuel. He wanted to outdo Pete. At the time, it was his favourite guitar and he didn’t want to ruin it."
