Twitter reveals surprising end of year UK top trending music stars list

Social networking and micro-blogging website Twitter has released its end of year rundown of the top trending music stars in the UK during 2012.

Surprisingly, the No.1 artist is rapper Rick Ross and Twitter explained how the list was constructed because heartthrobs One Direction and Justin Bieber, who seem to be constantly dominating the site, didn't even make the Top 10:

"Trends are the topics for which we see noteworthy spikes in Twitter conversations. The 2012 Trends reveal what captured our attention, rather than what terms were consistently popular. A surprise first place in this year's music trends went to Rick Ross. The U.S. star may not be as well known this side of the pond as UK acts like Jessie J and JLS, but he's certainly found a dedicated follower base on Twitter."

Rap music proved to be a popular trending topic throughout the UK over the past 12 months as hitmakers Nicki Minaj and Lil' Wayne also featured at numbers 2 and 9 respectively, while pop acts such weren't as prevalent.

The full list can be seen here:

3. Taylor Swift
4. Lana Del Rey

7. Rita Ora
