Tom Odell follows Jessie J and Adele in winning Brits Critics' Choice award

Tom Odell has followed in the footsteps of some illustrious names by winning the Brits Critics' Choice prize.

The award, which is presented to acts who music critics believe have big potential for the year ahead, has previously been won by singers such as Jessie J, Adele and Ellie Goulding.

22-year-old singer-songwriter Odell has won the 2013 award ahead of acts such as AlunaGeorge and Laura Mvula, becoming the first male winner of the prize.

Speaking in a statement, Odell said:

"I'm thrilled and honoured to win the Brits Critics' Choice Award."

He continued: "I genuinely can't believe it. Thank you so much. Looking at the list of amazing female artists who have won the award already, I just hope I don't let the boys down!"

Last year's Brits Critics' Choice award was won by Emeli Sandé, who went on to have the UK's best selling album of 2012.
