Hit songwriter Cathy Dennis warns One Direction against penning own songs

Successful songwriter Cathy Dennis believes One Direction could go on a downward spiral if they begin to pen their own tracks.

Most of the pop group's material is written by a team of writers and the formula has been extremely successful so far.

Speaking to The Sun, Dennis - who has created smash hit tracks such as Britney Spears' 'Toxic' and Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' - believes it would be a "kiss of death" if One Direction wrote their own material.

She believes that nothing "amazing" would come out of writing sessions, despite the increase in royalty payments that could come their way. Dennis said:

"It will be expected that they will write their own songs at some point. Someone is going to say, 'Hang on, the royalties coming in from just singing are not enough'."

The songwriter continued: "The guys who wrote 'What Makes You Beautiful' are millionaires. But if 1D started writing their own songs it could be the kiss of death, let's face it. I am not going to advocate that. To emulate the Rolling Stones - you can't have that overnight. I would not expect them to come out with anything amazing."
