Twitter launches new music app

Social media site Twitter has announced the creation of a new music discovery application, which will utilise user’s listening habits and contact lists to suggest and recommend new artists and tracks.

However this new music feature will only be available to well known celebrities until further notice, as Twitter cautiously limits the app’s availability for some last minute bug testing.

American television presenter Ryan Seacrest, who hosts TV talent competition American Idol, revealed yesterday (April 12) that he was privileged enough to obtain a sneak preview, tweeting that he was:

““playing with @twitter’s new music app (yes it’s real!)”

This message was then retweeted by the official Twitter Music account, confirming the existence and exclusive availability of the application.

Twitter seems to have made large inroads to the music industry this year after recently acquiring both video sharing site Vine and song popularity tracker service We Are Hunted. The San Francisco based We Are Hunted designers have posted a statement on their now-closed webpage which explains the situation, saying:

"While we are shutting down wearehunted.com, we will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team.

"There's no question that Twitter and music go well together. Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day. We can't wait to share what we've been working on at Twitter."

There has been increasing speculation that Twitter will publicly launch its music service soon to coincide with the Coachella music festival, which kicked off in California this weekend with a line-up including the xx, the Stone Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. However Paul Tollett, the president of Goldenvoice (the company behind Coachella), has reaffirmed the fact that Twitter has nothing official planned with the festival.

It is expected that Twitter, which now retains over 200 million users worldwide, shall integrate services such as Spotify, Rdio, iTunes, Soundcloud, Vevo and YouTube into its new application.
