Margaret Thatcher fans push chart alternative to 'Ding Dong!'

Supporters of Margaret Thatcher have hit back at the chart re-emergence of 'Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead' with a last minute campaign of their own.

The recent death of the UK’s former Prime Minister has proven to be divisive in the extreme, and saw the uncomplimentary Wizard of Oz song rocket in to the UK Top 40 in a bid to claim top spot.

However, supporters of Thatcher have now unleashed a rival internet bid for pole position in the charts – using the Notsensibles' 1979 track 'I'm In Love with Margaret Thatcher'.

This old punk track is being touted as a potential chart contender by a Facebook group called ‘I'm In Love With Margaret Thatcher" for #1’, whose homepage states:

"Let's get 'I'm In Love With Margaret Thatcher' to the top of the charts this Sunday. It's not too late!

"A download a day ensures Lady T's legacy will never go away."

The Lancashire based group the Notsensibles attach no great political emphasis to their now highly sought after track, describing it as:

“neither a pro nor anti-Thatcher song. It revolved around the idea that no-one was too sacred to get the piss taken out of.”

The song was featured in the 2011 film ‘The Iron Lady’, starring Meryl Streep, as the backing track to a montage of historic clips.
