Spice Girls and Coldplay among most valuable records

Record Collector magazine has compiled a list of records that fetch the highest prices amongst collecting enthusiasts.

The result of their poll showed that mainstream pop music acts are becoming more valuable.

Vinyl copies of ‘Spiceworld’ are now worth £30 due to the album mostly being sold on CD at the time of its 1997 release.

Rarer releases such as Coldplay’s single ‘Don’t Panic’ on 12” vinyl now has a much higher selling price as Parlophone focussed more on CD releases. Another prized scarce record includes a 7" version of Abba's 1979 track ‘Voulez Vous’ on red or yellow vinyl which is estimated to be worth £400.

‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilations are also popular collectible items. Valuable editions of the long running series include 1997’s number 35 on record, now worth £80, as few vinyl copies were bought at the time. Whilst number 4 on CD, released in 1984, is more valuable as the CD was a novel format in the eighties.

Record Collector magazine have said that their research shows: "a list of records worth reasonable money that might just be owned by people who have bought only chart or best-selling records in the last 30 years."
