Compilation albums enjoy sales boost

Compilations now account for one in five album sales in the UK.

Data collated by the Official Charts Company reveals that sales of compilation albums increased by 7.2% in 2012.

The figures - which are headed by the 'Now That's What I Call Music!' series - confirm that 21% of all albums sold are now compilations.

The first three months of this year meanwhile has seen an 11.8% year-on-year increase.

The best-selling compilation album in the UK last year was 'Now That's What I Call Music! 83'.

The 'Now...' series accounted for five of 2012's top ten best-selling compilations.
