Frank Ocean wins 'Person of the Year' Webby Awards prize

Crooner Frank Ocean has been named the 2013 recipient of the Person of the Year Webby award for his bold open letter, in which he revealed his past relationship with another man.

The official ceremony will be hosted by Patton Oswalt and is due to take place on May 22, but the winners of this year's categories have now been confirmed and Ocean has been crowned one of them.

He wins the title after publishing an open letter last summer via his Tumblr account, which sees him reveal that he was once in love with a man. Ocean wrote: "4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I'd see him, and his smile."

"Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realised I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with."

The Webby Awards' site posted details of his win, admitting that he has been an inspiring figure in pop culture over the past 12 months for a variety of reasons:

"The Webby Awards are proud to announce Frank Ocean as the recipient of the 17th Annual Webby Awards Person of the Year Award. Frank Ocean has had a truly remarkable, impactful year as both a musician and cultural icon, showing a deep understanding of the Internet as a communicative tool for social change."
