Fake Dr. Dre headphones among most seized items in the UK

A staggering 200,000 fake pairs of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones have been seized in the UK over the last year.

Research undertaken by BBC Radio 4's You and Yours shows that the audio items are among the most counterfeited goods in the country at the moment.

The radio show found fake headphones on sale at a market in Cambridge for just £15 - with the real versions retailing between £150 and £500.

Trading Standards' Tony Shore said that crooks are cashing in on the popularity of the headphones. He said:

"It's a trend - Dr Dre is a leading headphone and that's what counterfeiters will go after. They're quite sophisticated as a counterfeit item. Somebody is using the brand to make money illegally, which takes money out of future products."

Producer Steve Levine was asked to compare the fake and real headphones, who said that the packaging was "about two thirds of the size" of the original and that they were "rubbish".

Beats By Dr. Dre meanwhile encouraged the public to keep their wits about them when looking at headphones. They said: "If the price seems too good, it probably is."
