Lady Gaga makes speech and sings at New York's Gay Pride

Lady Gaga spoke and sang at the kick-off rally for New York’s Gay Pride last night (June 28).

At New York’s Pier 26 Gaga took to the stage to make a speech and briefly sing.

This was Lady Gaga’s first official public appearance since cancelling her ‘Born This Way’ tour earlier this year due to a hip operation in February.

Addressing the celebratory crowd Gaga said: “We are not a niche. We are part, a big giant part of humanity. It's time for us to be mainstream.”

The ‘Edge Of Glory’ star also lead a rally chant saying: “I demand the rights! To safe streets!” The audience then shouted back at her: “Enough is enough, enough is enough.”

Lady Gaga closed her appearance by breaking into an a cappella rendition of the American national anthem. However she altered the lyrics as she sang: “Oh say, does our star-spangled flag of pride yet wave.”

New York’s Gay Pride was a particularly jubilant event last night as previously this week the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Prop 8.

The supreme court found the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act to be “unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment.”

In support of the court rulings Gaga tweeted: “We stand tall today.#DomaStruckDown So many fought for so long. Be proud, the prejudice are now the minority.”

London's Pride Parade takes place today (June 29) at 1pm in central London.
