Ed Sheeran says labels turned him down for being "chubby and ginger"

Ed Sheeran has spoken of the rejection he endured in the early stages of his career.

The singer-songwriter is now a global superstar but it seems he found it tough to land a record deal.

Not only did prospective labels dislike his music, but Sheeran told SB.TV that they also didn't enjoy the colour of his hair and his figure. The 'A Team' man said:

"Every single label I had gone to at the time had told me this song wasn’t a hit. They said this song wouldn’t work. And the fact that I was slightly chubby and ginger was not a good ‘marketing tool’ for them.”

He continued: “So it did definitely feel like it wasn’t going to happen. But being an individual makes you stand out from the crowd.”

As previously reported, Sheeran was recently honoured by the Ipswich Music Day festival, who named one of their stages after him.

He played at the event in 2009 and 2010 and the move is said to have been made in recognition of supporting emerging talent.
