One Direction and The Wanted fans take part in morbid 'RIP' Twitter battle

Fans of One Direction and The Wanted have been engaging in a bad-taste battle on Twitter.

The terms '#RIPZaynMalik' and '#RIPMaxGeorge' have been trending worldwide on the social networking website today (July 5).

The feud reportedly started when fans of The Wanted launched the Malik hashtag in an effort to get it trending.

Directioners then retorted by creating their own morbid hashtag, this time targeted at The Wanted's Max George.

The term '#maxgeorgebackfromthedead', which was coined by The Wanted fans, later trended worldwide.

Level-headed fans from both sides, however, have questioned the Twitter battle, with one user saying: "Honestly the trend #RIPMaxGeorge is just stupid are we really going to go to that level?"

The Twitter spat echoes the two boyband's relationship in real life, with the music acts often slagging each other off in interviews and online.

George has been outspoken in his efforts to rile up One Direction, whilst Malik previously claimed on Twitter that the Wanted star has the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia.
