Mel C: "Relaxing about body image was liberating"

British songstress Mel C felt "liberated" when she started to relax about her body image.

The Spice Girls star suffered an eating disorder at the height of the UK girl group's international fame.

Mel now has three-year-old daughter Scarlet and says motherhood has changed her perspective on diet and fitness.

Speaking to British magazine Closer, she explained: "I'm careful not to overdo it because I had a breakdown when I was in the Spice Girls from working too hard, and I don't want that to happen again. I was also very controlling over my eating habits and I was obsessed with everything. I felt down and struggled to get out of bed. I was in denial about my eating problem, but taking antidepressants, along with counselling and acupuncture, cured me after 18 months.

She added: "When I fell pregnant, I made it my priority to eat healthily because I wanted to give her the nutrition that she needed. It was liberating to relax about my body."

Mel has been taking diet tips from friend Victoria Beckham as she trains for a triathlon.

She continued: "Victoria is on the alkaline diet and she swears by it for healthy eating and weight loss. It's loads of fruit, vegetables and grains. I need to eat lots at the moment because of my training regime - I'm running, cycling around 20k and swimming 1,000m a day. I'm looking quite muscular!"
