Sir Elton John receives inaugural Brits Icon award

Sir Elton John has been honoured with the first ever Brits Icon award.

The pianist collected the prize at a special event held last night (September 2) in London, which saw John perform a number of songs live.

The award is given to those who have made a "lasting impact" on British culture.

John performed new single 'Home Again' live on the night alongside students of the Royal Academy of Music, whilst he also played with Rod Stewart on 'Sad Songs (Say So Much)'.

A number of special video messages were shown to John, with contributions from the likes of former US president Bill Clinton, Ringo Starr and Ed Sheeran.

The event - which marked John's return to the stage following the removal of his appendix - will be shown on ITV on September 13.
