Lorde on fame: 'I can't think of myself as a star because I'm disgusting in general'

New Zealand born Lorde recently became the first person to score a No.1 single since 1987, but she has now confessed that she can't see herself as a 'star' because of how she is behind closed doors.

She reached the coveted pole position with her track 'Royals' and told MTV News that she's a far cry from the polished hitmakers she's used to seeing in magazines and is actually quite messy in reality:

"It's hard for me to think about it, because those people are huge stars, but I don't think of myself as such. Like, I know for fact that my hotel room is super messy, and I'm just a disgusting person in general. I'm not like 'Oooh, look at me!' You feel like those people are godlike beings, not the case with this cat."

Lorde added that while fame is always surprising, she wrote 'Royals' with an audience half in mind as she felt as though it was important to be aware that it might become popular:

"I wrote 'Royals' before I got big, but I wrote the whole record pretty much after, and people seem to like that. I couldn't not think about it gaining momentum while I was writing. I'm just focused on making more music, better music. I think I've got some great ideas already."
