Lou Reed dies aged 71

Lou Reed has died at the age of 71.

Rolling Stone have reported that the legendary American rock musician and founding member of the Velvet Underground has passed away.

The cause of his death is yet to be confirmed.

In May 2013 Reed underwent a liver transplant.

Lou Reed was born in New York in 1942 and named Lewis Allan Reed. He taught himself to play the guitar by listening and playing along to the radio.

The Velvet Underground made a seismic impact on avant garde rock and went on to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1996.

After leaving The Velvet Underground Reed struck out alone and would go on to release 20 solo albums as well as collaborating with a wide range of artists, from David Bowie to Metallica. 

Lou Reed is survived by his wife Laurie Anderson.
