Lorde pens $2.5m publishing deal

Lorde has put pen to paper on a new publishing deal worth $2.5m.

Industry bible Billboard reports that the 17-year-old New Zealand starlet has teamed up with Songs Music Publishing.

They say that the singer was the subject of a bidding war, with the likes of Sony and Universal's publishing branch all vying for the rights to her catalogue.

Songs Music president Ron Perry hinted that Lorde - real name Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor - could write songs for other artists in the future. He said:

"She's gonna be a really big songwriter outside of Lorde. She's going to have a lot of big songs out there as Ella...she's a once-in-a-generation type artist."

Her manager Tim Youngson, commented: "Even before signing her [Sounds Music] were bringing her options for collaborations and introducing her to other songwriters. The decision wasn't made on money."

Publishing companies hold the rights to artists' songs and are able to sign them off for use in films, for example.

Lorde meanwhile is currently riding high across the world with her track 'Royals', which features on her debut album 'Pure Heroine'.
