Jake Bugg: 'I'm glad I didn't win the Mercury prize because I was drunk at the ceremony'

Singer-songwriter Jake Bugg has admitted that he's glad he didn't win the 2013 Mercury prize because his acceptance speech would have been a mess.

During an interview with the BBC, Bugg confessed that while he was excited to have been nominated for the Mercury prize this year, he was relieved his name wasn't called as the winner as he was inebriated during the prestigious ceremony:

"I was quite pleased that I didn't win the Mercury because I was quite drunk and I didn't want to go on that stage and make a speech, to be honest."

When asked what he thinks of the winner, James Blake (pictured below), Bugg added: "I didn't particularly enjoy his performance at the Mercury Awards, but I could see that he's talented."

The talented young singer also recently explained that he believes a great song will come to the artist organically and there will be no need to force the creativity: "I believe songs write themselves, sometimes when I'm writing a song you just sing words, and its subconscious. Like when I wrote this song 'Broken', the word 'broken' kept coming out, it's you brain or your heart trying to tell you something."
