Cliff Richard: "One Direction are pretty impressive"

Cliff Richard has added his name to One Direction's growing list of admirers.

The veteran singer told the Independent that the boyband are currently floating his boat music-wise.

When talking about his favourite music, Richard said:

"I have quite eclectic taste, from rock to rhythm and blues and even some jazz singers. I love Adele's 'Rolling in the Deep' and One Direction are pretty impressive."

He added: "However, it’s hard to beat the old classics. Elvis was my idol and I still love his early recordings. I play a lot of CDs and my machine takes five at a time, so I tend to mix up my music. Elvis, Sinatra, Olivia, Beatles, oh yeah... and me too (sometimes)."

One Direction meanwhile recently knocked Cliff Richard from the top of the UK calendar pile.

The 73-year-old has traditionally been Britain's most popular calendar each year, but the 'Kiss You' group overtook him in October.
