Sam Smith, Ella Eyre and Chlöe Howl on BRITs Critics' Choice Award shortlist

The nominees for next year's BRIT Awards Critics' Choice prize have been revealed.

The award, which tips Britain's next rising star, will be contested by Sam Smith, Ella Eyre and Chlöe Howl.

The gong was won last year by Tom Odell, who went on to release debut album 'Long Way Down' in June.

Previous winners include Ellie Goulding, Emeli Sandé and Jessie J.

Sam Smith commented on his nomination: "I have watched the BRITs religiously for many years growing up.  The people who have won before are to this day some of my favourite artists and biggest inspirations. So to even be up for this award is completely overwhelming for me. I can't begin to tell you how thankful I am!”

Ella Eyre meanwhile said: "It's overwhelming to be nominated for a BRIT Award, to think that two years ago I was at The BRIT Awards on a school trip, and to be considered now is crazy!"

Chlöe Howl added in a statement: "I've followed the paths of the BRITs Critics' Choice artists since Adele won the first one when I was twelve. To be on the shortlist is incredible, and to be alongside two amazing artists is an honour. It's so exciting!"

The winner will be announced on December 12 and the BRIT Awards ceremony will take place on February 19 at London's O2 Arena.
