Music world pays tribute to Nelson Mandela

Countless members of the music world have paid tribute to the late Nelson Mandela.

The former South Africa president died aged 95 last night (December 5) at his home in Johannesburg.

Mandela spent 27 years in jail for political reasons before becoming South Africa's first black president in 1994, displacing the racially motivated apartheid regime.

Whilst his health had deteriorated in recent months, the news still saddened the world. His humility, dignity and courage was respected across the globe.

U2 singer Bono penned an open letter in which he said: "As an activist I have pretty much been doing what Nelson Mandela tells me since I was a teenager."

He added: "Without Mandela, would Africa be experiencing its best decade of growth and poverty reduction? His indispensability can't be proved with math and metrics, but I know what I believe…"

One Direction's Harry Styles meanwhile simply wrote on Twitter: "RIP Nelson Mandela."

Jessie J posted online: "Nelson Mandela showed and acted out in front of the world what the true meaning of "fight for what you believe in" is! Thank you for giving humanity your humbling spirit everyday until the very end. I am so happy that one day my future children will learn about you as a genuine leader of love and peace. An example to all. You are an angel. R.I.P."

Rihanna added: "One of the greatest men who's ever lived!!! #Legend We will never forget the things this man has taught us, and we will never truly comprehend the level of strength that it took for him to endure many of his years!! Thank you #Mandela."

Paul Simon meanwhile wrote: "Mandela was one of the great leaders and teachers of the twentieth century.  He conceived a model for mortal enemies to overcome their hatred and find a way through compassion to rebuild a nation based on truth, justice and the power of forgiveness. His passing should reignite a worldwide effort for peace."
