Madonna set to honour Prince at the Billboard Music Awards

The Queen of Pop is set to honour late music icon Prince at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards on May 22 in Las Vegas

Billboard explains that details of the tribute "remain a closely guarded secret" and the only piece of information released so far is that the ceremony will include a segment dedicated to the 'Purple Rain' musician that will involve Madonna.

Other confirmed performers for the event include Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, DNCE, Fifth Harmony, The Go-Go’s, Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes, Pink, Britney Spears, and Troye Sivan. There will also be a special collaboration from Nick Jonas and Tove Lo.

Madonna's manager, meanwhile, recently shared a memory on Instagram of a proposed tour starring Madonna and Prince that never materialised: "I called him a few years back with the idea of @Madonna and Prince going on tour together."

"I pitched it to Madonna and within a second she said "I like it, we can call it the Royalty Tour... The Queen and The Prince".... I love the way she thinks... When I told Prince the idea he said: "the world isn't ready for this, it's too big".. I always felt like one day I would pull it off.. @Madonnaperformed in #stpaul last year and Prince was generous enough to host us and perform for us after that show at his home #paisleypark ..
