Madonna and Stevie Wonder pay tribute to Prince at Billboard awards

Madonna and Stevie Wonder teamed up on stage at this year's Billboard Music Awards to honour late star Prince.

The Queen of Pop ran through the Prince-penned tune 'Nothing Compares 2 U' to open the segment at Sunday's (May 22) ceremony.

Surprise guest Stevie Wonder then joined in to perform 'Purple Rain'.

Questlove introduced the performances and called for a moment of silence from the audience before the music started.

Prince died aged 57 at his Paisley Park complex in Minneapolis in April, with the cause of death yet to be determined.

Billboard Music Awards producer Mark Bracco was recently forced into defending their decision to have Madonna pay tribute to Prince.

He said: "It's going to be very, very intimate and very respectful, and I think it's something that is really going to pay tribute to Prince as the incredible, groundbreaking artist that he was and the influence that he had on music."
