Universal Pictures gets into the groove with Madonna biopic

A Madonna biopic named 'Blond Ambition' not 'Blonde Ambition,' is said to be in the works. It will focus on the icon's earlier years in New York City.

The biopic has been picked up by Universal Pictures, and was written by an up-and-coming screenwriter named Elyse Hollander

The movie script topped last year’s “Black List,” which is an annual ranking of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays.

Michael De Luca, who produced Fifty Shades of Grey for Universal, is set to produce the movie, along with one of Hollywood's most successful filmmakers, Brett Ratner.

The biopic is set in the early 1980s, when Madonna Louise Ciccone reportedly flew from her hometown of Detroit to seek stardom in New York City, with only $37 in her pocket. It was there she began working on her first album, struggled with the music business which often treats women badly, and had her first taste of fame and the many pitfalls that come with it.

For the next five years, the superstar modelled, danced and waited on tables in restaurants, while playing in the bands Emmy and Breakfast Club.

Later Madonna decided to become a solo artist and got her big break in 1983, with her self-titled debut album, which yielded the hits ‘Holiday’, ‘Borderline’ and ‘Lucky Star’. It also set the stage for her ground-breaking 'Like a Virgin' album.

In 1989, Madonna was pulled from a Pepsi advert, after her ‘Like A Prayer’ video in which she was seen kissing a black saint caused outrage with the Vatican. During that time, Pepsi were so keen to distance themselves from the video, that they agreed Madonna could keep the $5 million advance they had paid her.
