Madonna supports jailed punk band Pussy Riot: 'What's happened to them is so unfair'

Global pop icon Madonna has spoken out in support of the jailed Russian punk band, Pussy Riot.

Three members of the band, namely Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich, are currently on trial in Moscow after being accused of promoting "religious hatred" during a performance and are now facing up to 7 years in prison.

Madonna has explained that she believes musicians and artists should be free to express themselves regardless of their views and she hopes the women won't spend time behind bars for simply playing a song with provocative lyrics:

"I am against censorship and throughout my whole career I've always promoted freedom of expression, freedom of speech. So obviously, I think that what happened to them (Pussy Riot) is unfair."

"I hope they do not have to serve seven years in jail. That would be a tragedy. I think art should be political. Historically speaking, art always reflects what's going on socially. So for me, it's hard to separate the idea of being an artist and being political."
